And what is science's rightful place?

President Obama has said that we need to "restore science to its rightful place." And what exactly is science's "rightful place"? Has there been some drought in funding for science in recent years? Has there been a slowdown in technological progress? Is there not enough emphasis on science and technology at the expense of the humanities in our institutions of higher learning?

Is there some danger that there will be too great an emphasis on disciplines that tell us how to use the increasingly invasive and sometimes dangerous technology that we're churning out every year?

Just wondering
