I'm pretty sure this is why they started saying "gender" a decade or so ago instead of "sex." Sex is genetically determined, but gender... I mean, how does a human even have gender in the first place? Nouns do, of course, but...
I still scratch out Gender on forms and write Sex over it. Paper forms, anyway. Cranky people like me may be why everyone's switching to electronic.
